When Does Tax Season 2027 Start? Deadlines and Refund Timing

Straight answer: the IRS hasn't set the 2027 opening day yet, but it has started accepting returns on a Monday between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 for five years running, and your 2026 return is due Thursday, April 15, 2027. If you e-file with direct deposit and your return is clean, most refunds arrive within about 21 days.

Below are the deadlines you can already put on your calendar, what affects your refund timing, and what changed for the 2027 season.

As of October 2026. We'll update this post when the IRS announces opening day.

When does the IRS start accepting tax returns in 2027?

No date has been announced. The IRS usually names opening day in the first half of January, about two weeks ahead. The pattern so far:

Filing seasonTax yearE-file opening dayFiling deadline
20222021Mon., Jan. 24Mon., April 18
20232022Mon., Jan. 23Tue., April 18
20242023Mon., Jan. 29Mon., April 15
20252024Mon., Jan. 27Tue., April 15
20262025Mon., Jan. 26Wed., April 15
20272026Not yet announcedThu., April 15

For 2026, the IRS announced Jan. 26 as opening day, and IRS Free File partners began accepting returns earlier, on Jan. 9. Those early returns are held and sent on once the IRS systems open. Based on the pattern, late January 2027 is a reasonable expectation. It isn't a promise, though: the opening date depends on how long the IRS needs to program and test its systems for new tax law.

What are the key tax deadlines for 2027?

These dates come from the IRS weekend-and-holiday rule in Publication 509: if a deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day.

DateWhat's due

Late January 2027 (TBA)IRS starts accepting 2026 returns
Mon., Feb. 1, 2027W-2s and 1099-NECs due to workers (Jan. 31 falls on a Sunday)
Mid-February 2027PATH Act hold on EITC/ACTC refunds lifts
Early March 2027 (expected)Most early EITC/ACTC direct-deposit refunds arrive, based on past seasons
Thu., April 15, 2027File your 2026 return and pay any tax due. Last day to request an extension. 1st-quarter 2027 estimated payment due
Fri., Oct. 15, 2027Extended 2026 returns due

A few notes:

  • W-2s on Feb. 1: If yours hasn't arrived by mid-February, ask your employer first. Once you have every form, our tax documents checklist helps you confirm nothing is missing.
  • Disaster postponements: If the IRS announces relief for your county after a hurricane, wildfire, flood, or winter storm, your filing and payment deadlines can move by months. The IRS applies this relief automatically based on your address of record. Check the IRS disaster relief page before assuming April 15 applies to you.
  • New rules for 2026 returns: Several 2025 law changes apply for the first time or are expanded on these returns. See 2026 tax changes and how to claim the tips and overtime deductions.

How long will my 2027 tax refund take?

According to the IRS refunds page, an e-filed return usually takes about three weeks from the day you file. A mailed paper return takes six weeks or more from the day the IRS receives it. The fastest combination is e-file, direct deposit, and an accurate return.

Things that slow a refund down:

  • Math errors, or a missing or mismatched W-2 or 1099
  • Identity verification letters (respond right away, because the clock stops until you do)
  • Claiming the EITC or ACTC (see below)
  • Paper filing, or a return with no bank details for direct deposit

Where's My Refund

The Where's My Refund tool at irs.gov/refunds shows your status about 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, or about four weeks after you mail a paper one. You'll need your SSN or ITIN, filing status, and exact refund amount. Checking it several times a day won't show anything new. If you later file an amended return, that has its own tool and a much longer timeline.

Why are EITC and child tax credit refunds held until March?

The PATH Act prohibits the IRS from issuing refunds that include the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. The hold covers your entire refund, not only the credit part. It exists to give the IRS time to match wage forms and stop fraud.

For the 2026 season, the IRS said most early EITC/ACTC filers would get their refund by March 2 if they e-filed, chose direct deposit, and had no issues. It also said Where's My Refund would show an updated status by Feb. 21 for most of them. The IRS hasn't published the 2027 dates yet, but expect a similar early-March window. Filing in late January won't get you past the hold, though it does put you near the front of the line once it lifts.

Are paper refund checks going away?

For most people, yes. Executive Order 14247 told Treasury to move federal payments to electronic methods. The IRS says it generally stopped issuing paper refund checks to individuals after Sept. 30, 2025, with a limited number still issued where no alternative exists.

What that means in practice (per the IRS Q&A, last updated Jan. 27, 2026):

  • If you file without bank details, your refund may be delayed. The IRS may mail a CP53E notice asking for account information. If you don't respond within about six weeks and there are no other issues, a paper check is issued.
  • If you don't have a bank account, the IRS points to prepaid debit cards and certain mobile payment apps that can accept direct deposit, and to the FDIC's GetBanked and MyCreditUnion.gov for low- or no-cost accounts.

Get your routing and account numbers ready before you file. It's the simplest way to avoid a refund delay this season.

Is IRS Direct File available in 2027?

No, as of October 2026. In November 2025 the IRS told its 25 partner states that Direct File "will not be available in Filing Season 2026" and that no future launch date had been set, as Federal News Network reported. Nothing announced since then brings it back for 2027.

Free options that still exist:

  • IRS Free File: guided software from IRS partners for taxpayers under an income limit
  • Free File Fillable Forms: electronic versions of IRS forms, available at any income but with no hand-holding
  • VITA and TCE: free, IRS-certified volunteer preparers for people with lower or moderate income, older adults, and people with disabilities. Our guide to free IRS help explains who qualifies.

If your return involves self-employment, rental property, back years, or IRS notices, paid help is often worth it. Here's what tax preparation actually costs.

Why file early in 2027?

You don't have to wait until April. Filing soon after your forms arrive has real benefits:

  • It blocks identity thieves. A common form of tax identity theft is someone filing a fake return with your SSN before you do. Once your return is accepted, that door is closed.
  • You get your refund sooner, before the April rush slows processing and customer service.
  • You have time to fix problems. A missing 1099, a dependent claimed by someone else, or a CP53E notice is easy to fix in February and stressful on April 14.
  • You know what you owe months before the payment is due, if you end up owing.

The fastest way to file early is to book your appointment before your forms arrive. Preparers' calendars fill up in February. If you're not sure you need to file at all, start with do I need to file a tax return.

What if I can't file by April 15, 2027?

  1. Request an extension by April 15. File Form 4868 (free through IRS Free File), or make an electronic payment and mark it as an extension. Either one moves your filing deadline to Oct. 15, 2027, as the IRS extension page explains.
  2. Pay what you can by April 15. An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Interest and the late-payment penalty run on anything unpaid after April 15.
  3. Never skip both. The late-filing penalty is 5% per month (up to 25%), ten times the 0.5% monthly late-payment penalty. Even if you can't pay, file or extend on time. Here's how to stop IRS penalties.
  4. Already behind on past years? Unfiled years and old balances can be resolved. See our back taxes help.

Frequently asked questions

When does tax season 2027 start?+

The IRS has not announced the 2027 opening date yet; it usually announces it in early January. For the last five seasons, e-filing opened on a Monday in late January: Jan. 24, 2022; Jan. 23, 2023; Jan. 29, 2024; Jan. 27, 2025; and Jan. 26, 2026. Expect a similar late-January start in 2027, but wait for the official announcement.

What is the tax deadline in 2027?+

The deadline to file your 2026 federal return and pay any tax owed is Thursday, April 15, 2027, unless you live in an IRS-declared disaster area with a postponement. If you file an extension by April 15, your return is due Friday, October 15, 2027, but the extension does not give you more time to pay.

When will I get my tax refund in 2027?+

Most people who e-file and choose direct deposit get their refund within about three weeks (21 days) of the IRS accepting the return. Paper returns take six weeks or more. Errors, identity checks, or certain credits can add time.

Why is my EITC or child tax credit refund delayed until March?+

The PATH Act bars the IRS from issuing any refund that includes the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February, and the hold covers your whole refund. In the 2026 season, the IRS said most early filers in this group would get their refund by March 2 if they e-filed, used direct deposit, and had no issues. Expect a similar early-March timeline in 2027.

Can I still get a paper tax refund check in 2027?+

Mostly no. Under Executive Order 14247, the IRS generally stopped issuing paper refund checks to individuals after Sept. 30, 2025. If you file without bank details, the IRS may mail a CP53E notice asking for them, and only issues a paper check if you don't respond within about six weeks and there are no other issues. People without a bank account can use a prepaid debit card or certain mobile payment apps that accept direct deposits.

Is IRS Direct File available for the 2027 tax season?+

Not as of October 2026. The IRS told its partner states in November 2025 that Direct File would not be available in the 2026 filing season and that no future launch date had been set. Free options that remain include IRS Free File, Free File Fillable Forms, and free VITA and TCE tax help sites.

What happens if I can't file my taxes by April 15, 2027?+

File Form 4868 (or make an online payment and mark it as an extension) by April 15, 2027, to get until October 15, 2027, to file. Pay as much as you can by April 15, because interest and the late-payment penalty run on any unpaid balance. The late-filing penalty (5% per month, up to 25%) is much bigger than the late-payment penalty, so file or extend on time even if you can't pay.
