IRS Letter 4883C Notice: Identity Verification — Phone Only
A 4883C letter means the IRS needs you to verify your identity by PHONE before processing the return filed under your SSN — unlike the 5071C, there is no online option for this letter.
What a Letter 4883C actually means
Same fraud-screen as the 5071C, different channel: the 4883C requires calling the Taxpayer Protection Program line with your letter, the tax return in question, a prior-year return, and supporting documents in hand.
Nothing moves until you verify — no refund, no processing. If you didn't file the return, the call is also where you report it so the fraudulent filing is pulled.
What to do, step by step
- 1Call the number ON THE LETTER (Taxpayer Protection Program) — not general IRS lines.
- 2Have ready: the 4883C letter, the tax return it references, your prior-year return, and W-2s/1099s.
- 3Call early morning for shorter holds; expect the verification to take 30+ minutes.
- 4If you didn't file the return, say so — you'll be guided through identity-theft steps (Form 14039).
- 5After successful verification, allow up to 9 weeks for processing to resume.
Common questions
Can I verify a 4883C online like a 5071C?+
No — the 4883C is phone-only (or in person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center if phone verification fails). Only the letter's own number can clear it.
